I like to travel alone as well. Part of that comes from my Forest Service work-- going to new places all the time and sometimes into hazardous locations. Anyway, I went to Hawaii in 2001 to spend 2 weeks with my sister. She was living there at the time, so I stayed with her. I took her car while she was working and explored the island (Oahu) on my own. It was fun!
Check out www.hawaiirainforest.org for some informative hikes. I took one of their hikes. It was a nature hike, so low stress, but the guide gave some GREAT information on plants and history. They have other things available as well.
One anecdote-- I was alone on the beach in Honalulu (after practicing snorkling for the first time in many years). A tour bus of Korean business men arrived to take photos of the beach. Many wanted their picture taken with me-- as an example of a typical American woman. Weird.
