Taker of Souls
Book 2: Passage of the Chosen
Being chosen is no protection against one’s own darkest nature…
It is the year 1224, in the city of Marrakesh, and a spice merchant’s wife named Laila is living happily with her family, troubled only by recurring nightmares about a twisted place and its deformed, bestial inhabitants. One night, the nightmare becomes all too real as she slips from her world into the place that has haunted her dreams her whole life. She returns to her Marrakesh only to be told by Azrael, the Taker of Souls, that she is a chosen. Laila is half grine, the twisted jinn who are born as the dark half of the human soul, who hunger for the human world but only get to experience it when their human becomes so evil that the grine and the human trade places.
Her task is to stop Iblis the Whisperer in his bid to corrupt all of the rulers of Marrakesh. Laila begins to hunt the grine in the human world…and almost immediately finds that she has a talent for the kill. Her grine nature becomes stronger and stronger, her actions less moral, as the grine in her begins to overwhelm the human in her.
The angel Azrael, who is supposed to guide and protect the chosen, is suspiciously absent, consumed by problems of his own and memories that will not leave him. Laila’s most difficult battle will be not against the Whisperer or against Iblis’s chosen, a young man who delights in his grine nature.
It will be against herself. If she loses this battle, it is not only Laila who will be destroyed. Along with her will die the Taker of Souls…
