The contamination was with vibrio, which isn't the same as red tide, and vibrio is pretty easily killed with cooking.
And yes, I know--my favorite parts of the peninsula are the northern and western sides. This, however, was where my folks were camping, and it's not like they let me vote on where they were going to be. :)
