Black Angel Crossroads: archive site
Jun. 10th, 2007 10:00 pmI tossed together a Black Angel Crossroads archive for those who would like someplace to go look at the stories later:
http://www.krismillering.com/serials/blackangeltitle.html
I'm going to be putting the rest of the serials here as time allows, but I figured that this one would be the most useful right now.
Also, if you guys could let me know if the Creole words and phrases I've started using aren't clear from context, let me know and I'll start a vocabulary post.

First, a picture of the Black Angel, for those of you who never spent time in Iowa City:

Yes, it's a real statue, and it really is just about as creepy as the angel in this story. I lived about two blocks away from it for a while, and I spent some time with it. I could never shake the feeling that there was a guardian inside of it, but who or what it was guarding was never clear.
And now, on to the story!

[This is the serial that needs a disclaimer. It's set in 1832 Louisiana, which was a very ugly time in American history. Those who are sensitive to certain attitudes about race and certain grim realities of the historical slave trade probably ought not to read this particular serial. That said, on with the story!

Black Angel Crossroads: Odile
Apr. 19th, 2007 06:18 pmI'm going to do something I rarely do, which is put a disclaimer before a piece of fiction. Storm and I are putting together a new serial, which is set in New Orleans in 1832, with a mulatto praticioner of Vodun as the main character.
There are certian historical realities that we're going to be delving into: the reality and the brutality of the slave trade, the social strata that blacks, whites, and those of mixed race occupied. We're going to go light on some of the more offensive words commonly used back then, but there's some stuff that we're not going to be able to avoid. (Such as the terms mulatto and quadroon, for instance.)
This was not a pretty period of history. This serial is going to reflect that. Those with sensibilities that might be upset by this sort of thing might not want to start reading it.
*****
That said, this is a character sketch of the main character, Odile. Note that I'm still working on a voice for this character, so she'll sound a bit different when I get around to actually writing her.
( They say a child born in the swamp is lucky... )
