strange request...
Jul. 26th, 2006 08:46 amDoes anyone know what the Scottish Gaelic word for "white" is? (White as in the color white, a noun.) Also, anyone know the Scottish Gaelic word for "claw"?
(Irish Gaelic will work in a pinch, if you know that.)
Edit:
"Claw" is spruithean or speir (speir comes from the same root as the English spur.) "White" is bàn. So it's concievable that Bànspeir and Bànspruithean could be surnames that would translate to "Whitespur" and "Whitetalon/Whiteclaw" respectively. Of course, I may be getting this compeltely wrong, but honestly, I'm looking for something to use in a bit I'm editing. I like Bànspeir, myself. It's shorter and quite a bit more pronounceable.
(This character has more surnames than I can shake a stick at. First, she's von Habsburg. Then she's de Merovingian. Then, after fleeing to Ireland, she takes the name of the clan of dragons who took care of her for a while. They're the Clan of the White Claw--thus, her last name translates to Whiteclaw.)
