The kind of surprising thing?
The drug they're using is ketamine.
It's not noted in the article that ketamine is an anesthetic (often a veterinary anesthetic) that is used recreationally by a lot of people (it's a dissociative/hallucinogen). They do note that it's unlikely that ketamine will become a widely used treatment for depression, though I could totally see it as part of a treatment package.
Kind of cool, though. Brain chemistry is a wild, wild thing.
