Places to go, things to see

So, Greece.

I know some of you have been there.

What's worth seeing? What's worth avoiding? We have an open itinerary at the moment. We're going to spend at least a day in Athens, so we're going to hit most of the obvious stuff there. I'd like to go to at least an island or two, so reccomendations on which islands are pretty and have things to see on them would be good.

I've known several people who have gone to Paros and really liked it. If I were to go to Greece, that's one place I'd be sure to visit.

I spent a week in Athens. It wasn't enough time, and we completely missed the islands. But the Acropolis was nice but very, very crowded. I really liked the agoras better, especially some of the ones that were tucked away. The Benaki museum was also pretty neat. Lots of different stuff instead of just focusing on one era.

My dad, who"s been there recently and not, says:

Greek islands:

See Santorini.... go to far end of island and stay above the cliffs overlooking the caldera/lagoon ...many fresh fish restaurants there.

Mykonos once was lovely...... in 1966 people came out of their homes on the far end of the island to invite me in for tea ...later to be there for dinner and dancing til 3am .....stars were incredible ...now the entire island is overdeveloped and brightly lit at nite with thousands of cars and scooters smelling up the place. A trip to Delos ruins is worthy, once capital of Agean culture, but requires a one night stay at Mykonos ...which is fine if one gets out of center of town (many loud discos reverberate till 5am).

Quiet, pastoral island...totally undeveloped is Amalfi ....also there are areas of Crete said to be great and ruins are good.

Don't know much about the islands near the Turkish coast ....Rhodes and many others filled with german, swedish, tourists.

Amalfi (tiny) and Crete (south and west coast are the recommendations).

Good way to Athens is to fly to Frankfurt and on.
