We were working with an existing legend, the Nine Unknown Men. The structure of the legend strongly suggested that we had to have nine volumes in the series.
So we have nine books plotted, each of them taking place in a different part of Asia at a different time period, each of them standalone except for a couple of larger threads that run through them all. It is going to be a bugger to write when I get to this series. Especially the last book, because it's a time travel book. (Argh. Time travel.)
It's going to be a while before I get there. I have the Middle East books to write first. :)
