There is a kind of cookie that is chocolate, and you form them into balls and roll them in powdered sugar, which then cracks when they bake.

What on earth are those cookies called?

Edit: okay, I found a recipe called "dirty snowballs" http://www.recipesource.com/desserts/cookies/33/rec3315.html and one for "crinkle cookies" http://www.post-gazette.com/food/20020425mailbo0425fnp1.asp . Both seem to be approximately what I'm after. i'll need to mix up the dough the night before, since it needs to chill overnight.

In the Betty Crocker 'Cooky Book,' which is apparently one of the most popular cookbooks ever published and which was just reprinted in its 1960s-era glory, it's a chocolate crinkle.

Given how many copies of that cookbook exist, you probably have run into their recipe.
