About six years ago, I bought a clock radio with a CD player.

I'd woken up to NPR almost every morning since I'd arrived at college in 1992. I liked NPR. The voices were soothing, and it was nice to feel informed about the world before I got out of bed.

But in 2002, a year or so after the WTC bombings, I realized that listening to NPR was actively enraging me. I would have a bad morning and then a bad day, because I would wake up and immediately get angry at the world.

So I bought a CD player. I wake up to Enya now.

I think maybe, in January, I'll be able to go back to listening to NPR in the morning.

Thanks, President-Elect Obama. Thanks for not being a zombie.

Alan being a Rawk Star

[livejournal.com profile] solcita and I went to see Great Big Sea last night. Back when we got the tickets, she'd emailed me and asked me if I wanted to go, since she had access to the presale. I agreed with great enthusiasm, since Great Big Sea is the only band I make a point of seeing when they come through. People, I hate rock shows. But I love Great Big Sea shows.
I was approximately four feet away.
So she jumped into the presale and bought tickets right when it opened...

And ended up with a pair of tickets in the pit. First row.

You guys, we were three feet from Alan Doyle for two hours.

That much combined charisma on one stage possibly ought to be illegal. As always, they do a fabulous show, though the audience was a bit lower-energy than the last time we went to a show. (Only one stage climber!)

You can go see solcita's review, or click through to see the pictures I took. I had only my little camera with me, but it did a good job, considering!
